The digital particle image velocimeter (PIV) is an imaging technique that measures the velocity distribution within a set plane using a laser light source. It is widely used in various fluid dynamics studies and is one of the so called Time of Flight (TOF) measurement techniques. The basic principle of PIV technology is to use a laser light source to illuminate the flow field and measure the particles visualized in the flow. Displacement and velocity calculation evaluation

The camera successfully recorded the image, and the next step is to perform PIV analysis. The image is divided into small search fields, typically 32 × 32 pixels. These small search areas are called interrogation windows. Apply these interpolation windows for cross-correlation between two images, with each interpolation window obtaining a correlation plane. The position of the interrogation window in the two images is the same (in standard FFT cross-correlation, interrogation window transfer algorithm).

Then, peak detection and displacement evaluation are applied to obtain the dominant displacement in each window. Since the pixel size of the traffic and the time interval between two images are known, the speed can be calculated. The size of one pixel of traffic is calibrated by simple speed.
